La Liga: Real Betis- Getafe

Betis have nothing but pride to play for, Getafe are very motivated and know that a win will earn them another season in La Liga, regardless of what happens elsewhere, as they win the h2h tiebreaker with Sporting Gijon.

The visitors were in tenth place in late January and then went into freefall, taking just two points from 12 starts, a dire run which left them at the foot of the table a month ago. That appears to have been the wake up call they needed and the catalyst for a revival and they are 2-2-0 since and scored twice on the road at both Real Sociedad and Deportivo to record only their second and third road wins of the campaign, but they meet a similar level of opponent today, in what is probably the single biggest game they have played in the last decade +. We have seen similar late season charges from them before, they were bottom 3 with two rounds to go in 2013-14 but took seven points from trips to Barcelona and Vallecano and a home game with Sevilla to finish their season and survive. Betis seem sure to rotate and several starting players did not train yesterday and it is hard to see how they can match the intensity of the visitors.

Top scoring Getafe midfielder Pablo Sarabia spoke about how focused the team were this week and that how, in the last few weeks, there has been a "tranquility" within the squad, he added that: "We know that our goal is the three points and do not care about anything else. "We are convinced that we will win on Sunday, and we will leave this club where it deserves, in the First Division. "We'll go from minute one for victory with maximum intensity. "

Both Sporting Gijon and Rayo Vallecano can still catch Getafe, each have very win-able home games and it is difficult to see any way that Getafe can survive without taking maximum points here. The visitors have taken a leaf out of Granada's book from their trip to play the other Seville team last week (see preview below) and have arranged for as many of their supporters as possible to travel to this game and no, or little cost, feeling that any edge they can get, might be decisive. Granada won that 4-1 and you have to feel that Getafe would like the safeguard of that second goal and given how this is likely to playout , it doesn't make the handicap start look quite so daunting.

Good Luck.

La Liga:  (written May 8th)

Las Palmas- Athletic Bilbao

Sevilla- Granada

We discussed two of these teams last weekend when Granada hosted Las Palmas ............

On paper, this looks a very good fixture for Granada, when fighting for survival, or a title/promotion, you cannot ask for any more than to face an opponent who has nothing to play for. That is Las Palamas, although it does have to be said that they have been in really good form for several months, collecting 25 points from their last 14 starts, compared to just 18 from their opening 21. That is a very pleasing first season in La Liga and you do get the feeling that it is perhaps time to ease off a  little and I doubt that today, they can match the intensity of the home team. Granada are one point above the drop zone and after today, have to travel to visit Sevilla and then host Barcelona on the final day of the season. The timing of the first of those might not be bad, as it is all about the Europa League for Los Rojiblancos, but it is not easy to just win at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium and Granada really need the three points today. They beat Levante 5-1 in their last home start and battled hard in a 2-1 loss to highflying Celta on Monday and a combination of those two performances should see them home this evening. Granada have won four home games in 2016, beating Sevilla 2-1, the other three were all against direct relegation rivals and they scored ten goals in those and were as ruthless as at anytime this season and despite Las Palmas' current high standing, I am sure that the home side will view them as a similar level opponent.

The vistors do tend to raise their game for the more high profile games and they have lost all five previous away starts against bottom six teams with a 13-3 goal difference. Granada to win similarly and look for that two goal cushion and safety margin. The absence of home central defender Jean-Sylvain Babin is not ideal, but they beat Sevilla here in his absence. Granada are trying everything possible to get an edge for this game and there will be a two hour "party" inside and outside the stadium before kick off to get supporters, who were very influential in the big win over Levante, in the right mood.

Granada showed us plenty of fight in that game and now sit a point outside the drop zone, two teams in the drop zone Getafe and Gijon meet in Madrid and one or both are going to pick up something and both will face teams with nothing to play for next weekend, when Granada travel to Barcelona who will be looking to win the title ! It is easy to see winning today as their best chance to be playing top flight football next season and they make the short trip to their Andulucian neighbours at the perfect time. Sevilla are fully focused on the Europa League and a route into the Champions League and are still recovering from their semi final second leg tie with Shakhtar on Thursday. They will have eyes only on the final with Liverpool in ten days time and if that was not enough, they have the Copa del Rey final with Barcelona just four days later and the talk is that they would not be too worried about losing today to their "friendly" rivals. Not sure about that, but this game means everything to Granada, next to nothing to Sevilla and the visitors have again tried to give themselves an edge and to get as much support behind them as possible for this game and have paid for free travel and match tickets for all 1,100 places available and 20 coaches will leave in convoy this morning. Sevilla and head coach Unai Emery have made the usual comments about respecting the league and other teams, but has made it clear he is battling injury and tiredness and I have to feel that Granada will win this. 1.75 units Granada -0.5 ball 2.25 general quote, a little higher in a place or two.
