Serie A : Genoa- Internazionale

I previewed Inter's home game with Bologna last week, speaking about their issues and inability to win since losing their way pre Christmas.......

Inter are really struggling, they have not won since December 3rd when they were top of Serie A with a 12-3-0 record, now they are 4th just a point ahead of Roma who host the basement club today and the Milan giants are very likely to be outside the Champions League spots just 70 days after leading the title race unless they pick up three points themselves. However, they have drawn five in a row and you simply would not trust them to hold onto a narrow lead, or come out on top in a close battle right now and if they are to win today, I suspect it will be comfortably, or not at all. I am ok with that, as I have no desire to take them at low odds and am happy giving up the bigger handicap as that is how I would expect their next win to come. They have continued to play well enough at times and in a 1-1 draw here against Roma last month put up some good numbers "winning" attempts 17-7, on target 7-1, inside the box 13-4, saves 0-6 (!) and hitting the woodwork 1-0 and led all passing and possession categories. Something similar would easily be good enough today and they just need a little luck now.

Bologna look booked for a lower mid table finish and have conceded the most goals (35) of any team outside the bottom six and should be ideal opposition.

Mauro Icardi misses out again for Inter and the top scorer is said to be on his way out of the club sometime very soon, so they had better start to learn to win regularly in his absence and it is not as though he has been keeping the scoreboard turning over recently. He missed four games last season, Inter won all four, including away to Bologna and scored 11 goals in the process, with Eder notching four

.
Goodness, they made hard work of that, but won 2-1 and hit the woodwork twice and at the end of the day, you could see just what getting that win and back on track meant and the next victory, which I expect to be today, should be a little easier to come by now that they have (re)discovered how to get the job done.

Genoa have found a little form, won their last two and hauled themselves up to lower mid table, but more importantly away from the drop zone, with a very decent 10 point buffer over the bottom three and their immediate need is nowhere near as great as Inter's. However, the visitors are still without Icardi ( see above) and Ivan Perisic picked up a knock last week and is also sidelined.

Genoa have issues themselves, Miguel Veloso and Adel Taarabt miss out, along with centre backs Davide Biraschi and Armando Izzo, with Genoa playing a back three those are big losses and will mean another reshuffle, their third is as many games. They are also introducing two players into the squad in Luca Rossettini and Jawad El Yamiq, with the latter only having a week with the team and they look vulnerable and even a little cobbled together today, they have won just 4 of 22 home starts ( losing 13), the two wins this season came against Sassuolo (15th) and Benevento (20th) both 1-0 and they are 0-2-7 at home when conceding a goal.
