I have had a poor outright League 1 selection this season in Rotherham United , who never recovered fully from a terrible start. However, that was unlike me.This is the league that I have followed all my life and seen many hundreds of games live and retain a strong feel for and our other outright bets in recent years stand testimony to that .

League 1 outright bets  ...........

2016/17 Sheffield United 3 units to win outright @ 7.0+ . WIN with 100 points.
2017/18 Rotherham United 1.75 units to win playoffs @ 3.25. WIN.
2018/19 Charlton Athletic 2.5 units to win playoffs @ 3.40. WIN.
2020/21 Oxford United to finish top 6 @ 6.0. WIN.
2020/21 Blackpool 3 units to win playoffs @ 3.75. WIN.
2021/22 Rotherham United 1 unit to win outright @ 13.0. second........ seven point lead with 10 games remaining!
2021/22 Rotherham United 2.5 units to win promotion@ 4.50. WIN.
2023/24 Portsmouth 1.5 units to win outright @ 11.0. WIN.
2023/24 Portsmouth 3 units to win promotion @ 4.0. WIN.

Anyway, I have a fairly strong opinion in the playoffs and that is for XXXXXX , who  XXXXX. First the numbers.....

Last 19 seasons (since we have been previewing them) :  Teams finishing 3rd have won eight times, the team in 4th five , 5th and 6th on three occasions each.

Points picked up over the second half of the season :  Charlton Athletic 51 points ( +17 compared to their first 23 games), Stockport County 50 (+13) , Leyton Orient 44 (+10) and Wycombe Wanderers 34 (-16). It is very unusual for three teams to have double digit improvement through the second half of the campaign and it makes the Wycombe numbers look disastrous.

Across the last 10 games: Stockport 25 pts, Orient 25, Charlton 22 and Wycombe 16. Again, three teams to have 20+ points is not common.

In terms of h2h round robin (games between the four teams this season):  Charlton Athletic 14 points ( 4-2-0), Stockport County 8 pts (2-2-2), Wycombe 6 pts ( 2-0-4), Orient 6 pts (2-0-4). Where to start , as there is a lot in between the bare stats. Charlton were unbeaten and far and away the best, also, no team scored more or conceded fewer (3 was 5-8 goals better than the other three teams), County were winless at home, conceding 9 goals and Wanderers won the first two in early season, lost the last four including by a combined 1-7 to County (1-3) and Athletic (0-4) in their last two home games.

Wycombe really look up against it and all the numbers highlight that, they lost their head coach mid-season and after his departure suffered a 0.8 points per game drop off and he took all the self belief with him! Incoming boss Mike Dodds lost all six games against playoff contenders (top 7). Top scorer Richard Kone (18 goals) has not scored since March 18th and second top Daniel Udoh (9) only once since March 4th, no one else has scored more than 7 goals.

I think County- Orient is closer than odds would suggest, with Stockport almost half the odds, recent form is close and the East London side are full of confidence and only champions Birmingham City have scored more goals. We have some history with County as we were tracking them in National League North and the National League and five years ago I wrote .....

Stockport are newly promoted from the National League North, but were formerly a Football League club (106 years) but have been living very hard times since 2011, I must have seen them play Brentford a dozen times prior to that and County always had a good following and they have stuck with the club and/or returned recently. Over 5,000 watched their home game last week, 25% higher than the second biggest National League crowd and it was more than at four League 1 grounds (two levels higher). They have a stated ambition to reach the Championship within 7 years, it is similar to the Fleetwood plans and they are upgrading all facilities and their ground along with the team and ambition is high, but not totally unrealistic and with the demise of Bury, the area of Greater Manchester could support another league club. They announced a Director of Football last month in Simon Wilson, his CV is reproduced at the foot of this email, not sure how many clubs at this level have a DOF, not many I guess and his background is impressive and has to be a significant plus.

In January, the club changed hands with Mark Stott, who is referenced at the end of those notes on the DOF, taking over and clearing all existing debts at County, he is a lifelong fan and founder and CEO of Cheshire-based Vita Group. At the time he stated: “I am excited by the opportunity that lies ahead to support Stockport County FC to fulfill its great potential both on and off the pitch, by creating a more sustainable model for the future of this historic football club that includes deepening its longstanding ties with the local community.“Throughout all of the ups and downs it has faced over the years, the Club and its supporters have always shown immense character and resilience, which is one of the many things that makes Stockport County FC a unique community club.

Here they are three promotions later and with the chance to reach the Championship two years ahead of schedule! Don't say that you didn't read it here first!

I wrote a further few hundred words of analysis and content for subscribers and hopefully we found another League 1 winner!

Good luck!
