The competition is now at the quarter final stage and the second legs will be played on Sunday. The Cup, for my stating the obvious comment of the day, gives the winner some silverware, but no international competition reward and is very much third best to the league and Emperor's Cup.

Shonan Bellmare- Sanfrecce Hiroshima
Yokohama F. Marinos- Kashiwa Reysol
Yokohama FC- Vissel Kobe
Urawa Reds- Kawasaki Frontale
We have a lot to consider.
Shonan, Marinos and Yokohama are all in a relegation scrap. The other five are all top 8 and involved in the tightest title race in many years and the race for AFC Champions League Elite spots seems likely to go down to the wire, with 3 or possibly even 4 places up for grabs.
The Emperor's Cup semi finals are not played until November, but victory will get you into the CL Elite and Vissel Kobe and Sanfrecce Hiroshima clash in that in the last four.
Additionally, Sanfrecce and Kobe are also involved in this season's CL which starts this month, with six rounds to play before the end of the year.
We could make a case for all eight teams, at least to some degree, having other priorities to the J-League Cup and this is 4th best for Sanfrecce and Vissel, but this round and the semi finals are played during international breaks so I suppose that you can counter argue that it keeps teams match fit and is preferable to playing a friendly game for those players not on duty for their nation. Also, those teams on the road this midweek have the chance to turn things around at the weekend should they lose the first leg.
Shonan Bellmare have won just one title in the last 31 years and that was this competition in 2018 and chances to win something do not come around too often for such a team. They came into this season with renewed optimism after a strong finish to their 2014 campaign, but, as you can see from the league table, things have not gone well and this will be the 8th season in a row since promotion that they have finished between 12th-18th place ( no relegation in the season they finished last). XP also places them bottom of the table currently, but that is all very close and the teams in 4th and 20th are only separated by 10 points and a lot of small margins have decided games this season. Shonan are coming off a 4-5 home defeat to Gamba Osaka, they led 3-1 in that and were denied by the woodwork, but had to play the second half with 10 men, so, small margins and not much luck! They have actually scored 9 goals in their last three home starts (2+ in each) and XGF suggests that they should have scored 7-8 more goals.
