I am not getting overly involved in the Serie A games, but there is something I wanted to mention. This season, only the top 5 in the league will qualify for Copa Libertadores (5th goes into qualifying) instead of the normal six, the extra spot will go to the runner up in the Copa do Brasil, so, both finalists will qualify for the premier international competition. We all know that they will get one or two extra places anyway, either from the domestic cup, if that team or teams has already qualified via the league, or through Sudamericana (where they could have 7 of the final 16!). However,it is worth remembering later in the season and it gives the Copa do Brasil, which is always treated seriously in any case, greater importance and the R16 two legged ties for that are scheduled for August 1-2 and August 5-6.
Anyway, just a few words about two games taking place this midweek ......

Bahia have finished 8th and 7th in the last two seasons and qualified each time for the Copa Libertadores and for the first time since 1989. They made it to the group stage last season, but fell short in qualifying this year which is unusual for a Serie A team and they will be very determined to have another crack and to secure the hat-trick. They are already out of the Copa do Brasil, so all their eggs are in the league basket. Bahia face an always difficult trip to Belo Horizonte to play CAM who are a traditionally big player, but who have finished behind the visitors in each of the last two seasons and who are doing battle on three fronts and yet, have not played a competitive game in 51 days, whereas Bahia restarted their campaign with a win last week. The away side are strong early season performers (been top 4 before the halfway stage in each of the last three campaigns) and so should be less affected by the WC break than some other sides.
Flamengo are, along with Palmeiras, the big regional superpowers and they did the dream double ( Serie A and Copa Libertadores) last season. Their target will be a very difficult repeat, but they are "guaranteed" top 5 and will not worry about having been eliminated from the domestic cup. What they will be fully focussed on is keeping the gap to Palmeiras manageable. The leaders have a more difficult game this midweek and Fla will be devastated if they do not collect maximum points at Chapecoense who are looking to avoid a third straight relegation from the top flight, but that already looks a lost cause and they have won just two of their last 57 Serie A games. However, they have scored in their last nine home games in all competitions and Fla have conceded 10 more goals than they had at this stage last season.
