Guess who's back, back again. "Shady's" back, tell a friend.

Edit: I wrote the article below back in July and posted it on the website shortly afterwards.

Monza opened their campaign with a whimper, losing their first five games, but have seven points from three subsequent starts, which included a defeat of Juventus and 3-0 win away to Sampdoria. Did anyone doubt that the owners would do enough to ensure that the Serie A newcomers survived and was anyone surprised that the upturn in results coincided with Berlusconi's return to parliament nine years after he was expelled for tax fraud . Apparently he was "working" in a care home to satisfy the community service part of his sentence.............I could say so much about that, but will resist the temptation! Berlusconi won over 50% of the vote in, yes, you guessed it........Monza! His 32 yo girlfriend Marta Fascina, also won an election last month in Sicily, she will (re)take up a seat in the lower Chamber of Deputies, Berlusconi was elected to the upper house, the Senate. The 86yo former care worker has no limits on ambition despite his great age and who knows where his story, or the future of A.C Monza will end.

Serie A:

Between the 2011/12 and 2021/22 seasons 30 clubs were been promoted to Serie A and exactly half (15 ) were relegated in their first season, it is getting increasingly hard to survive as 12 of those were amongst the last 21 (57.14%) . Of the 15 who survived only two finished top half (9th and 10th) and the other 13 between 11th and 17th, with 11 finishing 14th or lower ( 4 in 17th spot). Two of the three promoted teams have been relegated in four of the last seven seasons and if two of Lecce, Cremonese and Monza manage to survive, they will have done well, but we already "know" that one "will".............

Monza are playing in the top flight for the first time in their history and have been 100% owned by Silvio Berlusconi (yes, that one!) since September 2018. When he took charge the club were in the third tier, they finished 5th that season, won the title by 16 points the following year, they finished 3rd and 4th in two Serie B campaigns, coming up via the playoffs in the second. You can say what you like about Berlusconi and plenty have with varying degrees of success, but he has been a winning owner, with Milan claiming eight scudetti and five Champion League titles during his reign . Now that he has got Monza into the top flight, just as he said he would and having done so inside 44 months (from the third tier), I doubt his ego will accept anything less than survival and possibly (much) more.

His long time right hand man Adriano Galliani who was CEO at Milan is chairman at Monza which is the city of his birth and his boyhood club, one he used to go to with his mother as a youngster , he was VERY emotional on promotion day and those childhood memories of football stay with you forever. All he could say afterwards was "I've done it"! The duo might only have paid 3m € for the club, but they signed 30 players (!!!) in the first transfer window they were in charge and invested very heavily to get out of Serie B (70-80m € ). "Hey big spender" is the song of choice when Galliani enters any room, he has already signed 14-15 players for the new season and you suspect they will invest whatever it costs, to get to where they feel they need to be.

Good luck!
