Italy Serie A: Juventus- AC Milan

Milan lost 3-2 at Anfield to Liverpool on Wednesday, they led 2-1 at half time , but it was a backs to the wall job for the Italian side for virtually the full 90 minutes.

It is a learning curve for the former European champions this season, their first time playing Champions League for eight years and with what is basically a young, albeit fast improving squad, but they  will improve and learn from that defeat and head coach Stefano Pioli spoke about exactly that post match.

About a year ago I noted ................

Italian clubs like to do things differently and after saying that they would not renew Stefano Pioli's contract, Milan have now given the head coach a two year extension. That at least makes sense, they have been heading the right way for months, are unbeaten in 12, scoring 28 goals in the process and that sequence included starts against all top 5 teams, from which they took an average of 2.2 points per game.

That stability obviously helped and I Rossoneri are coming off a second place finish last season, their best since 2012. It will have pained them that it was neighbours and biggest rival Inter who broke the title stranglehold of Juventus , but it is a return to the good times and one of Serie A's youngest squads (eight outfield players were aged 22-24 yo at Anfield)  , despite containing Zlatan and Giroud, is only going to get better and certainly be competitive on the domestic stage. If that is to result in a real title push ( they were ultimately 12 points short last season) it will have to come along with big showings in games like this.

Milan have won their last four away league starts and by a combined 13-0 ! They include wins at Atalanta (2-0) and here in Turin over Juve (3-0) a game which was played at the end of last season, but only just over four months ago , so will be fresh in the memory, add in that they also drew 0-0 here in the Coppa Italia last season and I doubt these youngsters are going to step off the team bus with an inferiority complex today and, the "Old Lady" has lost that fear factor. Juve are winless and have lost their last two, including their only home start, 1-0 to newly promoted Empoli, who have lost their other two games, both at home , conceding five goals in the process, which hardly franks the formline ! The Juve finances are in a mess, they are not alone in that, but have just reported a massive €210m loss for the last year and the picture is going to look worse before it improves as they have already given a profits warning for this season.
