More goals in yet another West Coast derby ........

San Jose Earthquakes- Portland Timbers

I doubt many of you will be surprised that I am sticking with goals in yet another West Coast derby game , it is the gift that keeps on giving and with Timbers last three games all producing six goals and the last two Earthquakes home games playing out 6-1/3-5 and 17 goals scored in the last five h2h games here in San Jose, what option do I have ? This is not one of the really high scoring WC games traditionally, but these two are the entertainment kings of MLS play at present and ahead of Timbers 4-2 win at LA Galaxy last weekend I wrote.....

Timbers hosted the other LA team last weekend and I noted .....

Here we have yet another (there are millions of them!) West Coast derby, games which almost always produce goals and this looks set up perfectly to continue the trend. Timbers are unbeaten in five games, scoring 11 goals, LAFC have conceded 14 in their last five road starts in all competitions. This fixture finished 2-2 last season and FC edged a five goal thriller 3-2 in LA. They have actually won the last two in the City of Angels by that same scoreline. I pretty much expect both teams to again score twice and great value IMO with .....

That finished 3-3 and made 13 goals scored by Timbers in their last five starts, with five conceded in the last two . This fixture has traditionally followed suit and the last six meetings here in Carson have finished 3-2/3-3/1-1/2-1/4-1/3-6 and another shoot out feels firmly on the cards. Galaxy have had a nightmare start to their campaign after a brilliant 2024, but expected numbers have them a little better and they put in one of their better showings in Portland earlier this season in a 1-1 draw and they are going to need a goal, probably two to keep pace with this new improved version of Timbers and, as usual, this WC derby game should revert to type.

2.25 units Portland Timbers to score "over" 1.5 goals @ 2.25 asian line.

1 unit "over" 4.5 goals @ 4.02 asian line.

The five goals required were scored inside 70 minutes, there were five BC's missed (10 total) and today's fixture has at least as much shootout potential.

CF Montreal- Philadelphia Union

Have I missed something here, maybe I have as the odds do not make a lot of sense!

Union are a Eastern powerhouse and after finishing 3-1-2-1-4 in five years, 12th place last season was not deemed anywhere near good enough and head coach Jim Curtin was sacked after 11 seasons in the job, from a role that seemed his for life 12 months ago! He was replaced by Bradley Carnell who I do not know a huge amount about, but he knows how to get a team up and running and was head coach of St Louis City in their debut MLS campaign when they won the Western Conference, which was an incredible achievement. They look ideally set up to play on the road and it is hard not to be impressed by their first three away games , they beat Orlando 4-2, New England 2-0 and whilst they lost 2-1 to record setting, superstar laden Inter Miami, they won xG, BC's 6-3, attempts 19-7 and TIPA's 27-13.They have played one road game subsequently losing 1-0 to NYCFC but were again the better team statistically and have won two home games by a combined 6-0 in the interim.

Montreal are 0-3-7 scoring just 4 goals, they started the season with 7 straight road games as their stadium was being worked on and only two home games to date failed to produce a goal ....0-0 Orlando and 0-1 Charlotte. I have seen this before when a team has to basically spend two months on the road and that nomadic existence makes it difficult to build momentum, even when you eventually return home. This is a very quick turnaround for them too, as they had to play a Canadian Championship game in Toronto against their biggest rival on Wednesday and that went to a penalty shoot out. Union have had a free week to prepare solely for this fixture and have a great scoring record here in Montreal with 12 goals (2+ in each) in their last five visits in what is a traditionally high scoring fixture. If we are to get another, Union seems better suited to coming out on top right now and even if the goals do not flow, they look in much stronger shape.

2 units Philadelphia Union -0.25 ball @ 2.37 asian line.

Good luck!
