The Big 5 European Leagues: how they played out ............

football betting tips -

It's (mostly) raining goals!

The 2024/25 EPL campaign has just ended and produced the fewest home and most away wins since the COVID affected 2020/21 season. There was also a 0.34 drop off in goals from the previous season, but that is definitely not a cause for concern as the last two campaigns have been the highest scoring in the history of the Premier League and a 0.6 goal per game increase from the early 00's.

Ligue 1 followers were royally entertained too, with the highest scoring season in modern times (2.97 goals per game). They have been on the rise over the last decade and are a huge step up from 04/05-08/09 when those five seasons came in at between 2.13 and 2.28 gpg. Last season also saw a huge drop off in the number of draws with 20.26% which was 6.21 % fewer than in 23/24 and the only campaign in the last decade when they have come in at less than 24.21%. Hopefully, both trends continue.

Bundesliga football is the gift that keeps on giving! Every season since 2017-18 has seen an average of over 3.03 goals and last season came in at 3.13. All teams apart from champions Bayern conceded at least 41goals. However, we did see the fewest home wins in at least two decades and probably much longer, maybe ever! At 38.56% they were barely more than aways (36.27%) with draws staying fairly stable. That is an interesting development and should be monitored.

Serie A followers saw 2.56 goals per game ( 2.56 and 2.61 the previous two seasons) and seem to have settled back to traditional levels after 19/20 (3.03) , 20/21 (3.06) and even 21/22 (2.86) offered hope that we were heading into a more goal laden era of Italian football. We do get clubgowi favourites Sassuolo back in Serie A next season which might help and they scored over 2.05 goals per game in the second tier, the most in that league for seven seasons. Fingers crossed!

Nothing too much changes in La Liga, where goals almost always come in between 2.5 and 2.6 per game each season and despite Barcelona scoring 102 goals (!) it only just made it over that number at 2.61. No team outside the top 6 had a positive goal difference or scored more than 48 goals and only one scored more than 44. To give that some context, in the EPL, 14 teams scored 51+ and three teams outside the top 7 scored 64+ goals and another (different) three had at least a +7 goal difference. That is why television companies fall over themselves to throw money at the ultra competitive EPL!

Good luck!
