Premier League 2026/27 Part 2

The EPL is already the Greatest Show on Turf (hybrid surfaces actually, but that doesn't have quite the same ring to it), but this season is building up to be an absolute classic, with quite possibly the most open title race and league in years. Big money has been spent ,all the Big 6 appear to be going for it, but most also have issues!

Over this week and next I will be looking at all 20 teams for subscribers and I am going to let you look at two today, one fairly negative, the other, which will be posted shortly in another post, far more positive

Sunderland

I have been a bit doom and gloom so far, but this isn't going to improve things! First up, some positive thoughts, Sunderland are a big club who finally got back to the promised land last season, spent a fortune and were rewarded with not only survival, but 7th place and European football.

However, they did not overly impress me, their transfer dealings worked out well, but there are not really any that I would want my club to rush out and try to buy and they really rode their luck. They had a negative goal difference (-6), the worst amongst the top 13 and 42 goals scored was the 4th fewest. XP gave them 12 fewer, XGA suggested they should have conceded 12 more and they were 18th for total attempts.

They have not signed anyone yet this season, despite having an additional eight European games to play as a minimum and with all opponents having more data on them now and the Black Cats no longer being a surprise package.

Sunderland are back where many feel they deserve to be, but their recent rise has been meteoric. In 2022 they were third tier (League 1), in their 24/25 promotion season they finished 24 points behind the top 2 and are now in Europe! These rises have a habit of catching up with teams and I strongly feel that might be the case this season, but, if they can survive and have a fun European adventure, it will be a successful season. But I am expecting a very significant drop off.

Good luck!
