I am not getting overly involved today (in terms of stakes) on Matchday 1, but it is a good opportunity to put down a few background notes.
We have two big name clubs up from the third tier in Sochaux and Dijon, the latter were in the top flight as recently as 2021, it is not unknown for teams to be promoted back to back, but I feel the duo will have stability/survival as their first and main priority.
Nantes and Metz came down, the latter are a perennial yo yo club and it is never boring for their supporters. Their last 16 seasons have featured 7 relegations and 6 promotions! I am not sure how long that bounce back can continue, this season looks tough, they showed little real ambition to survive in the top flight last season and their budget has been halved for this campaign. Nantes are a very famous club and finished 9th in Ligue 1 in 2022 and won the Coupe de France that season. Their budget has also been slashed, but will still be 30-35m€ ( I don't have full details yet) and that will almost certainly be top 2. They sold their top striker for a big fee, but spent a decent fee for this level on a replacement and look to have strengthened in most other areas and they should go well.
Other big name teams in Ligue 2 include St Etienne, Stade de Reims and Montpellier, the first two had the two biggest budgets in the second tier last season and each put themselves into a strong position to claim an automatic promotion spot and, it has to be said, blew it! Montpellier were in their first season in L2 after an awful relegation campaign and pretty much stayed 7th-9th all season and their expected numbers were terrible, suggesting their had overachieved to the tune of 19 points!
St Etienne are part of Kilmer Sports Ventures, who took over the club in June 2024. The Toronto based sports investment group are owned by billionaire Larry Tanenbaum, as are all the Toronto sport franchises under the Kilmer Group, including the Maple Leafs, Raptors, Toronto FC and Argonauts. President of KSV is Ivan Gazidis who has held executive positions at Arsenal, AC Milan and the MLS. This is a serious organization and they own lots more besides, including dedicated sports television channels and media outlets, but as far as I know, Les Verts are their only European based investment right now and as such, you would assume it is important to the parent company and to their future ambitions.
They are now managed by Scottish coach Ian Cathro, who spent the last two seasons with Estoril in Portugal as head coach and before that worked a long time as assistant to Nuno Espirito Santo and his CV looks pretty good. They are conducting a very analytics based recruitment model and have been signing players from across Europe and for big money in Ligue 2 terms (circa 10m € net spend).
Reims had the second biggest budget last season and were top 2 in February , they finished the season top for xP and had finished 12-11-9 in Ligue 1 between 2022 and 2024 and looked more likely to kick on from that point, than go the other way. They got two big transfer fees into the club, but have strengthened ..............the rest of these notes are for subscribers only ( email for details of sign up options) and we have also covered Brazilian Serie A and EFL Cup games today.
Good luck!
