Dortmund- TSG Hoffenheim

Dortmund's most recent home league game was a 3-3 draw with Stuttgart late last month, ahead of which my notes went an awful lot like this .....

I have long term bets on both teams, but a soft(er) spot for the visitors, also, their odds are big and Borussia has a Champions League game on Tuesday and are suddenly finding goals a little harder to come by. They have scored exactly one goal in five straight games, including against two promoted teams and also a Bundesliga struggler. Stuttgart have won 6 from 7 in the league and are starting to play up to the ability levels and potential we have seen for the last three seasons and ahead of this campaign I wrote ....

Stuttgart have finished 9-15-16-2-9 since returning to the Bundesliga and that second place in 23/24 was their highest since winning the title in 2006/07. They were a breath of fresh air the season before last with 78 goals and 73 points,  a first Champions League campaign in 15 years was too much last season, but they retained a goal threat and 64 scored was 8 more than anyone else outside the top 4. Further encouragement comes by way of xP (+8 points) and xGF (+7 goals) and the latter only puts them 7 adrift of that fine 23/24 campaign. They also won the DFB-Pokal last season, that gives them Europa League football, but it is not the distraction that the CL was and they will be more used to a European campaign now. They have been active in the market, with five in and five out, but they sold one to Saudi for a largish fee and overall, it feels like good business. Head coach Sebastian Hoeness remains despite being much admired, he has had 100 games at the helm, through which they have scored an average of 2.10 goals per game, guiding them to the Champions League, second place and winning some silverware, it is a great CV. I am a pretty big fan and early in that 23/24 campaign I wrote ......Stuttgart play with great joy under Sebastian Hoeness who was the first coach to win Germany's third tier with a reserve team, his record at Hoffenheim looks great with hindsight and having saved Stuttgart last season, he has completed the about turn and got them playing with gay abandon in possession.

These two have almost identical expected numbers, but Stuttgart are in better shape right now, do not play again until next Thursday and have not lost in six h2h meetings (5 wins) scoring 15 goals in the process.

We have a similar situation today as Borussia host a free scoring side, happy to play to their strengths on the road and the hosts have an upcoming Champions League game, where they need all three points to stay in the top 8. Hoffenheim are having a fantastic season, sit 5th, are unbeaten on the road , where only Bayern and Frankfurt have scored more. They have scored 2+ goals in 5 of 7 visits to Dortmund and this is probably the best version of Hoffenheim who have stepped off the team bus in that time. The visitors have posted three top 6 finishes in the last decade, but the most recent of those was in 2019/20 and with no European commitments and out of the DFB Pokal they can focus solely on the task at hand, which are their remaining 22 Bundesliga fixtures.  Hoffenheim head coach Christian Ilzer has just completed a year in charge and, at the time of his appointment,I spoke about the massive overhaul going on at the club ....

Hoffenheim have a new head coach (new everything really) in Austrian Christian IIzer, who has been wildly successful at Sturm Graz and he will be looking for a debut win. Ilzer brought almost all of his coaching staff with him and Sturm sporting director Andreas Schicker has already made the move last month, chief scout/technical director Paul Pajduch has joined too and I can never recall that happening before, at least not to the same degree. Graz did the domestic double last season (first double in 25 years and first title in 13 seasons) and made the Champions League group stage (first in 24 years), so easy to see why their staff were so admired.

That has clearly gone well and they are 9 places, 15 goals and 11 points better off than this stage last season. They have had a free week to prepare for Dortmund who have already played six more games this season, two of them in the last 12 days.

2.25 units TSG Hoffenheim to score "over" 1.5 goals @ 2.89 asian line.

Good luck!
