Premier League: West Bromwich Albion- Sheffield United

I wrote some lengthy notes on United last Sunday ahead of their home loss to West Ham ..................

Sheffield United had a dream like return to the Premier league last season and were never in relegation trouble at any stage, spent most of the campaign hovering around the European spots and eventually finished 9th. It has been a rapid and meteoric rise after still being a League 1 side in 2017 , but are now in that almost always difficult second season following promotion, especially when things have gone almost too well in the first and it does feel that maybe it has all caught up with them. The Blades sum was always greater than their parts and they have a head coach in Chris Wilder who loves the club and for whom the players have (or perhaps had) total belief and would run through a brick wall for, if asked.

They had spent six seasons in the third tier before that 16-17 promotion and quite a few players remain from that time and it is a group with some talent , but a lot of what I would say was more like Championship quality and much of what they have done well in the last 2-3 seasons is down to discipline and being well organised. That can serve you well,  but only so far at this elite level, teams at this level will work you out , have seen it all before and United are no longer the surprise package they were early last season. They have a single point from 8 starts and only took 15 from their last 12 games in 19-20 and 16 from 20 outings is bottom 3 level whichever way you look at it and is how they have been playing post lockdown and for more than half a season. They score too few goals, concede too many and this is backed up by their ITB numbers on both sides of the ball and the Hammers are a net +51, creating 26 more, giving up 25 fewer and also allowing opponents 7 fewer BC's. West Ham numbers are good and even more impressive when we see they have played four "Big 6" teams plus Leicester City and Wolves , they have a bench full of players that would probably start every week for the Blades and I have to favour the visitors.

They lost 1-0 but didn't play too badly, started well and if they had taken an early chance they probably get something from the game, but that is the way of things when nothing is going your way .

Today they travel to the Hawthorns to play WBA about whom on opening day I wrote ............

Albion's return game to the top flight. I feel similarly towards this as I did the Fulham-Arsenal game yesterday, the Baggies were not the second best team in the Championship last season and claimed second spot by virtue of their rival slipping up. WBA won just 3 (against teams with an average league placing of 16.7) of their last 11 starts and collected only 33 points over the second half of the campaign which was about 9th place level. Fulham and WBA were not even close to the level of Brentford last season, let alone Leeds United, who should be the only promoted team to thrive.

They are winless too, three draws from their 9 starts, so three wins in 20 games and all victories against lowly Championship opposition ( see above).

ITB puts United on 48-84 and WBA a very similar 43-81, but the Blades have a big edge in terms of BC's, being 13-21 compared to the Baggies 3-23 and the visitors clearly pose the greater goal threat of the two. United's last two away starts have been against Liverpool and Chelsea, they scored first in each and if they could repeat that feat today, they obviously have more chance of holding on. Oli McBurnie poses a threat for United up front and continues to work tirelessly, their club record signing £23m Rhian Brewster is working back to full fitness and looked good off the bench last week showing some inventive touches which have been sorely missed and Lys Mousset is ready to return , today or next week after a couple of months on the sidelines and things suddenly look more promising for the visitors. Brewster scored 11 goals in 22 Championship starts for Swansea on a half season loan from Liverpool and it is this type of game/opponent that his PL breakthrough might come .  It all comes down to what the two teams are creating for me and 0.33 BC's a game is not going to win you much at any level, so it has to be United.
