Brazil: Serie A: Ceara- America Mineiro
These two were playing in Serie B last season and know each other pretty well. I have opposed each this season and ahead of Ceara's last home game, a visit from Flamengo , my notes, which were largely focussed on the away side, included ..............
Ceara were promoted back to Serie A last season after six years in the second tier, they did not score many goals (46 in 38 games) and it will certainly not be any easier to do so at the higher level. They have been thrown in at the deep end with four very tough games to start their campaign and have yet to score and now meet Flamengo, who could be amongst the best this season.
Ceara have had just three attempts inside the opposition's box so far in 180 minutes of football and it already feels like this will be a long season for them and possibly one goal enough for Flamengo today.
They lost that 3-0 and again, did not create a lot, but in two subsequent games (league and cup) they did score four (both draws), including a point in a noteworthy 1-1 stalemate at Corinthians, so some improvement in that aspect and there was a little to like in their build up play against Fla. What did impress me that day was the level of support, some 53,000 in the ground, it included a lot of Flamengo followers, but Ceara were regulary getting 50k+ in the second level and I had forgotten just how well they are supported. That will give them an edge as not all visiting teams (none ?) will travel so well this far North.
Ceara play in Fortaleza which is right up the top of the country on the NE Atlantic coast, we often speak about the long distances and tough conditions teams face travelling to Recife, well, this is 700 km further on ! It is almost always hot and sticky/humid/wet here during the football season and America will have left pleasant conditions in Belo Horizonte to make the 2,400 km trip due North, to face all of that, with Fortaleza hot, wet and very humid today. Conditions which will clearly favour the host.
America have also made a brief appearance in my notes this season and along similar lines to my thoughts on Ceara..........
America are back in Serie A and continue to yo yo between the top two divisions, but goals are always an issue for them and will again be so IMO, despite them opening with a 3-0 defeat of Sport Recife last weekend. Home and away is very different in Brazil, Sport are poor travellers in any case and America had the newly promoted team factor to boost them last week. They scored only 23 goals in their 2016 relegation campaign and "only" 46 /38 as B champions last year.
America have won both home games, but lost their two on the road and know that survival or otherwise will be decided by results in Belo Horizonte and whilst this will be easier on paper than their two trip to Rio where they lost both and conceded six goals, they will have one eye on their home game this coming weekend. Ceara do not have that luxury, they despeartely need three points and quickly and already, this feels like draw a line in the sand time, with their next three home opponents Gremio/Cruzeiro/Palmeiras a fearsome looking trip of games.
Ceara signed Hyuri on loan from Atletico Mineiro (which will ensure he will be up for this against another BH team) since I wrote the notes above and he will be hungry to do well after a fruitless 2017 in China (he did very well there on a previous two year stay), he played 20 minutes at Corinthians and will now be pushing to start and looking to kick start his career in his homeland.
