FIFA World Cup: Nigeria- Iceland

Iceland opened with a famous 1-1 draw against Argentina when my notes included ............

They (Argentina) need to lay down a marker, a statement of intent and are far more used to breaking down a massed defence which they are likely to face today, than a team like England and if they can force Iceland to open up (obviously by scoring) and out of their comfort zone, we saw v France in Euro 2016 what can happen (5-2). Iceland put on a 'defensive masterclass' at Euro 2016, that is the general perception, but they did not keep a cleansheet, faced a barrage of chances, really rode their luck and have given up a goal in 12/16 comptitive games. Since qualifying for the WC finals they have played eight friendlies kept just one clean sheet (Indonesia), conceded 15 goals and lost 3-0 to Mexico , 3-1 to Peru the two teams from the Americas they faced, which hardly augurs well for today.

They played well and caused problems for Argentina defensively, of course, that looks a little devalued after last night, but not by much and you would not convince Iceland that it was in any case. They did allow the South American team 27 attempts on goal and only completed 132 passes which I think are the highest and lowest numbers at these championships, but they were going very direct (as usual) with the latter.

Nigeria started their campiagn with a  2-0 loss to Croatia ..............

Nigeria have played in five World Cups previously and made the R16 three times, including in Brazil in 2014, but they are neither the surprise package they were in early appearances , or as good and the golden genration of talent has passed. They looked below average in the warm up game with England and should have been up for that with big support and seven squad players earning their living in the top flight, but those clubs Leicester/Chelsea/Arsenal/Brighton/Stoke, the Seagulls aside, have had poor seasons and maybe they are carrying that with them. They are the youngest team at these championships and could field a starting eleven today with up to five players aged 22 or younger, their keeper is just 19 and has been playing third tier football in Spain and they are going to struggle to keep Croatia out, but probably have a goal in them with almost all their talent up top. They have even talked about fielding two players, Ndidi and Balogun, who are carrying injuries which doesn't augur well.

They played poorly, but did have ten attempts inside the box (Argentina just 8 last night) which is something  (conceding twice from dead ball situations tells us something else and will not have gone unnoticed by Iceland especially Gylfi Sigurdsson ) and Croatia winning against the group favourites last night has completely changed the complexion of this game. Win for Nigeria today and a point might be enough in their final group game, it will certainly leave matters in their own hands, should Iceland fail to take max points, they will almost certainly need to beat Croatia on Matchday 3 ,who might even let them win, or at least take things easy , but they cannot know that and is for discussion on another day. Nigeria went with the 19 yo keeper (see above) and their two holding players are just 21 and 22 and they look vulnerable defensively and we know that the Icelanders rarely keep a clean sheet, but if they win, it takes Nigeria out of the qualifying mix and I expect both nations to look to win and each to concede. Nigeria will have more time on the ball today and the conditions in Volgograd 30-31 degress and feeling warmer will surely suit them better. Set up in training has hinted at big changes including a switch to a back three , I am expecting more from them, the same as usual from Iceland, which could still be enough.
