National League: Notts County- Stockport County

It is two months since we last discussed Stockport County ,who featured heavily immediately pre and post lockdown, when I I wrote ahead of a midweek trip to Wealdstone ..................

This will be Wealdstone's third National League start following promotion from the 6th tier and all have been tough fixtures, road trips to Yeovil (2-2) , Dagenham (1-0 loss) and now a visit from Stockport County who we have been "promoting" through the opening weeks of the campaign and who are coming off a 3-0 win over Dover ( see Saturday notes ) . The hosts must be a little weary and have a slightly quicker turnaround having been chosen for the late televised game at the weekend. In that they were poor, did not have an attempt on target until injury time, looked lacklustre , played a midfielder in central defence and were very vulnerable to the press. We have detailed the strength of the County additions and they are firstly a level above the largely still sixth tier home group and far better used and able to deal with this kind of heavy schedule and quick turnaround of games. Away win.

County won that 5-2, the notes reference included my thoughts on a trip to Maidenhead at the end of last season (March) a game which I attended, their off season investment and a game on opening day at Torquay United which they totally dominated and which is relevant now as United now lead the league by six points ! ..............

In the game at York Road, United took the lead through a piece of very inventive play, but looked second best the entire game , low on confidence and County were always likely to turn it around, which they did and fairly comfortably. I was quite impressed and if the season had carried on, I think they would have been certain to finish in the playoffs, as it was they missed out on points per game by a single place. They are in a relatively strong position financially which is even more important in these COVID-19 haunted times and they invested heavily over the summer.

Eleven new players have arrived and it might take a week or two for all to gel, but they have added both talent and experience and players who know how to get out of this division, we can take a quick look at three.  The Jennings brothers,  Connor has 200 games at this level , 90 in League 1 and League 2, scored prolifically throughout his career and been involved in three playoff campaigns with Tranmere, two of which were successful, one in the Football League. James has 234 National League games under his belt and 87 in the League and he has a LOT of goals and assists for a left back, a LOT !  John Rooney, brother of Wayne, has played 267 matches in NL and a full season in League 2, he scored 17 goals from midfield last season in Barrow's title winning team. County have really pushed the boat out to sign Rooney, he has been given a good and lengthy contract for a 29 yo and his fellow Barrow team mate Scott Quigley who narrowly edged out Rooney for the NL golden boot said:“I’m gutted he’s gone, to be fair.“But it’s hard to turn down Stockport, who you can’t deny are a big club and they’re going to be knocking on the door to come into this league (League Two)."

That trio are full of goals and have 700 National League games between them, almost all in successful teams and another couple of hundred in the Football League and County have upgraded in a lot of other playing areas too. The club has also invested heavily in their training facilities and really look on the up.

County opened with a 1-0 loss at fellow promotion hopefuls Torquay United at the weekend , I would not overly worry about that, there were a huge number of debutants who will all be more in sync today, despite that, County dominated and the home head coach said his team "defended like Trojans" to keep the visitors at bay.

County had a bit of a blip after that,  taking only a point from two home games back to back in October and they had a series of games postponed which made it difficult to get any real momentum or to bounce back, but they have now played four times subsequently, beat two league teams in the FA Cup, including on on the road to a decent third tier side and two National League games, winning in the last ten days away to both Bromley (3rd) and Barnet. They are 9th in the league with 19 points which leaves them 7 off second place, but they have only played 9 games, which is 3-4 less than almost everyone else. I am of the opinion they are the best team in the division and whilst the heavy schedule might cause problems at some stage with cup commitments and 4 games to catch up on, it is certainly not an issue at present, they need games currently and will be the freshest team in the NL. Goals have been hard for the home side to come by this month, just one in three starts, including two played here at famous old Meadow Lane. County have yet to let us down so let's stick with them.
