PGA Tour: Canadian Open

I will not be able to cover this event on Sunday which is the usual slot for PGA events, but to be honest, if I had to cherry pick one to miss , it might well be this , it is being played on a course that has not been used for this event in more than a decade and despite five of the world's top ten teeing off, there is not a huge amount of depth beyond that. All the big names will already have one eye on next week's US Open and some will be using this as warm up only and might even consider it unlucky to win the week before a major.

I can say a few words about one golfer who would love to win this and I do expect him to take a PGA Title this year and that would be his first and that is Matt Fitzpatrick, he is playing really well this season and on the final day of the most recent major, the PGA Championship I touched upon that ............

I am interested in the 27 yo baby faced British golfer from Sheffield, Matt Fitzpatrick. He has yet to win the US , but has been doing so in Europe since he just turned 21 and in elite events. He is a seven time winner on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, including the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, on two occasions, the last ten winners of that are Fitzpatrick (2), Rahm (2), Morikawa , Rory (2), Stenson (2) and Willett , all of whom are major winners and four of them have been ranked top 2 in the world, average golfers do not win that tournament and certainly not twice ! Fitzpatrick is also the former #1 amateur player in the world and won the US Amateur title and at the course where next month's US Open will be played and it feels like time for him to step up, if not today then very soon, but I feel strongly that it will be this afternoon. In the last seven stroke play events in which he has started all four rounds, he has finished 12-6-10-9-5-14-2 and that screams a winner about to happen, he averaged 68.8 on Sunday across those seven rounds and that might well be enough to win today. He has played back to back at two tough , long courses which suit his game (like the Dubai event) and shot 68 or better in five of the seven rounds. Matt usually plays well in contention, but has just never got into things through three rounds in a major before, but now he is and was very excited in post round interview yesterday and wasn't afraid to talk about winning and you would be surprised how rare that is

He was fifth in the end and missed the cut next time out ,last week at the Memorial, but I would not worry about that, in fact it could be a bonus, he has three top 5's next time out after his last four missed cuts and it gave him a little rest time and a chance to get a little longer to look at a "new" course. He has top 5 finishes in limited starts at the two courses ( Valspar and RBC Heritage events) most similar to St George's Golf and Country Club, our host this week , that he has played on tour, and should go close.

0.5 units  Matt Fitzpatrick to win outright 19.0 general quote.

1.5 units  Matt Fitzpatrick to finish top 10 @ 2.75- 2.875 general quote.

Good luck!
