28/12 Premier League: Southampton- Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have scored two or more goals in their last four visits to St Mary's winning three times and having seen a very lively performance from the hosts at Bournemouth last time out where I expected them to struggle, they might need to do so again, to get anything from today's game. In the South Coast derby, Jay Rodriguez (pictured) returned to form with a powerful showing and two goals and Nathan Redmond put in an eyecatching offensive display and I will be surprised if the duo do not find the net between them.

On paper it looks a miserly Spurs defence, with only Chelsea conceding fewer goals , but I have seen them look very suspect at the back in the last 5-6 weeks and they have been riding their luck at times. However, they have scored in 8/9 and notched three goals or more four times in that sequence and when things do click for them, they can score thick and fast. Fifth placed Tottenham need all three points to keep a buffer over fast closing Manchester United and to close to within one of deadly rivals Arsenal and with the other top seven teams in the top flight having already won this round, failure to do so is going to see them lose ground to everyone. Both to score, Tottenham to win.

29/12 Championship: Rotherham United -Burton Albion

I opposed Burton for their trip to Aston Villa on Boxing Day where my notes included .............They (Villa) have subsequently won at QPR and are just six points off play off place, failure to reach top six would be a disaster and back to back home game before New Year will close the gap and also release more funds for the January window, when Villa are looking to spend heavily yet again. We can contrast that to tiny Burton Albion who have a budget more in line with one of the stronger League 2 teams and who were playing at that level in 2015 and non league football in 2009. 40,000 + at Villa Park today and almost all of that number are coming to see an emphatic home win. Albion have been the poorest visitor to Griffin Park this season, look way short of Championship quality and back to back promotions and just the size of the club and ground and desire to stay within budget, has caught up with them.

Villa recorded a 2-1 win, but Albion were on top for long periods in the second half and raised their game, buoyed by the occasion and massive crowd, but that might not be so easy today in a real relegation battle. United have given themselves a lifeline win a win over Wigan Athletic three days ago, racing into a 3-0 lead at the half, before being pegged back to 3-2, those points still leave them bottom of the Championship, nine points from survival and Burton, who sit one place and two points outside the drop zone. You can see that a follow up win would mean it was very much "great escape" on for the Millers, but any other outcome is going to make it very difficult to survive and it should be all or nothing today. Just three cleansheets in 20 starts combined for these two, including a 2-1 win for Albion in the reverse fixture early this month , when we went "over" and I oft repeat that two struggling teams usually means goals and it is very hard to see either keeping the other scoreless today.
