WTA: Western & Southern Open

7 months since we last covered tennis and a lot has happened in the interim, not much on court of course, but off it, many players have used the time to improve fitness and /or rebuild their game and you can see some notable changes, especially in service action. Venus and Garcia are two of those for sure. These courts in NY also look faster than we usually see at the US Open , no surprise as in March this year Flushing Meadow switched to Laykold hard courts made by Advanced Polymer Technology, replacing the DecoTurf that had been in use since 1978. This is the same surface as at the Miami Open , so a lot to take note of, low key start as usual and NO RUSH we have the US Open on the same courts immediately afterwards and we can just ease into these three weeks.

Johanna Konta- Vera Zvonareva

I cannot tell you how excited I was when I heard that "Mad Vera" was returning to tennis for a third time, as she is always such fun to watch, you do not get the nickname "mad"  by being anonymous on court and no one could smash a racquet quite like her ,actually, a smash was usually preceded by a bite and followed by a long distance throw and final kick, top class demolition work ! She is a former world #2 and two time slam finalist, including here in NY. Her comeback has been a "success" in that she broke into the top 100 briefly and won two doubles events , her first titles in six years and anyway, the real reason for her return was so that her daughter could see and remember her play, if that is true, it is as good as reason as any. She started 2020 ranked almost 500, but has come through qualifying here and beat Laura Siegemund 1&1 in Round 2, but I am not sure how much tennis her 35 yo body is up to and she withdrew from her pre lockdown event (low level) after making the semi finals with what appeared to be tiredness as much as any injury.

Johanna Konta has got her ranking back inside the top 20 after a dip in form but has spent much of the last 5 years inside the top 10/top 20 and this is her favoured surface, absolutely loving these US hard courts and she is a former Miami Open winner so must have skipped with joy at the surface change here in New York. Konta is 30-5 on hardcourts versus players ranked 100+ when her own ranking is inside the top 100, which includes 10/10 in the US, eight in two sets.
