Wimbledon : WTA: Ashleigh Barty - Daria Kasatkina

I have to take on Ash Barty at these quotes, at Eastbourne I wrote .............

I like Ash Barty, she is sporting, a good improving player and with big potential on grass, but she has little winning experience against top ranked players, especially on non hardcourts. She is 37-11 on grass which looks great, but 0-2 v top 10, and 28 wins are v players ranked 101 +. Her win rate on all surfaces is 32% v top 20, with 80% of wins on hard and she is basically even money today and I haven't got to the worst part yet ! She is 4-17 on non hard courts versus played ranked top 50.

Wozniacki has 50 career wins on grass, almost half of which have come here at Eastbourne (24-8), she is 5-1 in quarter finals here on the South Coast, winning the last five all by between 5 and 7 games, today, at #2 she is at her highest ranking going into one of those last 8 match ups. She is a two time finalist , one time winner, lost in the decider to Karolina Pliskova 12 months ago, so still has ranking points to defend and is clearly taking this seriously, witness the coaching remarks I made yesterday, when I took her on to lose to Konta on two sets. That looked on the cards when she lost the opener, but she ran away with the last two sets and looks in good and motivated shape. She leads the h2h 2-0 winning in Cincinnati last year on hard and in Madrid on that most un-clay like of courts early last month.

Wozniacki won 4&3 , Barty beat two players here ranked 95 and 191, but now faces Daria Kasatkina who is (too lowly) ranked at #14.

Kasatkina is coming off an easy win over Yulia Putintseva  ahead of which my notes included ............

Most of you know how highly I rate Daria Kasatkina, she has the tennis world at her feet, but has played very little on grass, just 12 matches (7-5) and is 2-5 v top 50, 5-0 versus those outside it, all four wins here at Wimbledon in two sets and by an average of six games( Putinseva is currently 55). Putintseva is tiny, listed at 1.63m (maybe in heels !), but makes up for it in feistyness, with a super competitive attitude and she could start an argument in an empty room ! She likes clay and is probably happy enough with her prize money for R2 and additional points (lost in R1 12 months ago), another win would be a bonus , but she is 3-11 in main draw events on grass and has never taken a set off one ranked inside the top 50 and Daria should win this in double quick time. She committed to grass for the first time this year, has been in England for almost a month and that too early exit from RG might work in her favour.

At Indian Wells earlier this year I wrote ..........

The 5-6 months she has spent with coach Philippe Dehaes have been very productive, he knew her from before and did some work with Dasha when she was 15yo and said at the time that he "had never seen a talent like before" , Dehaes had worked with Xavier Malisse and Christophe Rochus and was talking about a girl barely into her teens !

He gave an interview to the NY Times last week and it included this ........

Insiders already know Kasatkina is a big-time talent, but outsiders will soon figure out that she is an entertainer as well.

“I think when people will see her regularly in the Grand Slams, they are really going to gravitate to her because her game is really atypical,” Dehaes said. “She likes the show. She likes the jump backhands, the drop shots. She plays this way naturally, but it’s festive tennis. I insist on leaving her a lot of freedom when she plays, but she has to create, has to make things happen, really like an artist. I compared it to an empty canvas a few days ago, and I said she can make whatever art on that canvas that she wants as long as it’s beautiful.”

If you have access to all the colours, it seems a pity not to make use of as many of them as you can.

We have only seen the tip of the iceberg with Kasatkina, her potential is limitless.

Kasatkina has very little experience and is meeting a top 50 opponent today of course, but no reason why she cannot step up, she has every shot in the book and did not give Putinseva the same look at any ball twice in a row, she has potential for grass, just needs perhaps to fully convince herself, but the four weeks in the UK has clearly helped in that regard, we have to try something at such good odds

1.5 units Daria Kasatkina to beat Ash Barty 2.80 Pinnacle/Sportmarket Pro.

Good Luck.
