Tuesday November 12th

Tomorrow looks far and away the most interesting day of the midweek, at least in terms of quality of fixtures, with a full round in Brazil getting underway, I also want to take a look at the DP World Tour Championship golf and one other event and might have to split things over two emails, but will update that in the morning, as usual the next newsletter is due at 10.00 UK time on Wednesday.

Today is not without interest, but betting limits are a little on the low side, so I am going to keep stakes small and comments fairly brief. As always in this competition, I am looking to play what I feel will be the more motivated of the two teams, or the one who is likely to be less inconvenienced by progression. Clubs can make money from the JPT, but not until the latter stages and for most, it is a case of seeing how things go early and setting priorities on a match by match basis.

Johnstone's Paint Trophy:

Stevenage Borough- Leyton Orient

Boro have edged away from the drop zone a little with five wins in seven starts, including winning four home games in a row, beating some quality (at this level) opponents in MK Dons and Brentford. No real reason for them to ease off now and they have a fine history in these lower level cup competitions making the final of the FA Trophy three times in four seasons, immediately before gaining league status. Orient are riding high at the top of League 1 and progressed in the FA Cup on Saturday with an easy win over Conference side Southport, they got a home draw in the next round and surely that and the league campaign, is more than enough to keep them busy, given that they have one of the smaller League 1 squads. We have discussed them many times this season, ahead of the recent trip to Northampton to play Coventry I wrote ... "We took City with the quarter ball handicap start there, the match ended 0-0 which was fine and probably a fair result, Orient won the penalty shoot out, which is how things are going for them this season, no injuries and any luck in games going their way. That will change and we are waiting for the effects of a long season and reliance on 4-5 very key players to kick in with this small squad, that has massively overachieved so far. All credit to them for doing so, but there will be a cost somewhere down the line and we will be ready ! It is not tonight, as Orient will be unchanged, they have been able to field the same starting eleven, including tonight in 12 of 13 starts, one player missed one game, approaching a third of the way through a modern football season, have you ever heard the like ! Obviously they are playing with massive confidence, but the lack of rotation is an increased concern, at least for me, especially with the quick turnaround and I have to take a little on City who are very resilient, they have taken eight points from four tough games since the loss to Brentford and have had slightly the better of the two previous meetings between the two."

They lost that 3-1, but have got back on track with two league victories and that FA Cup win, however, despite the addition of striker Robbie Simpson ( who was deemed surplus to requirements by Oldham Athletic and who has "done the rounds" in recent seasons) to the squad yesterday on a two month trial deal, I suspect it will ..........

Oldham Athletic-Notts County

........new County boss Shaun Derry started with a loss to League 2 side Hartlepool United on Saturday and whilst avoiding relegation will be his priority and remit, he will surely want a confidence boosting win as soon as possible. His team are "over" in 6 from 9, including their last three, Oldham have scored and conceded in each of their last three, both teams had very tough matches at the weekend and this could get very stretched late in the game, on what will be a heavy playing surface. Giant County striker Enoch Showunmi played his first 30 minutes since mid August at the weekend and will add to Derry's options this evening, last five County cup ties have produced .............

Newport County- Portsmouth

County must be running on empty, having just returned to the league, they are still adjusting to this level and the gruelling schedule has meant this will be their 9th start inside 38 days, 6 of the last 8 have been on the road, with some very long away days from South Wales. The .......

Chesterfield - Rochdale

....... Dale meanwhile made the circa 600 mile and ten hour round trip to Torquay and back and their match was in the balance until they scored twice after the 86th minute to record a fully deserved 2-0 win . With a ......

Good Luck.
