Brazil: Serie A: Sao Paulo- Cruzeiro

I spoke in midweek about Sao Paulo's poor form , but change of head coach earlier this week............

Sao Paulo and Gremio are tied for 4th on 58 points with the visitor having the advantage, courtesy of one more win.

SP will be more disappointed by the current situation, at the end of August (21 rounds) they led Serie A by three points, 7 ahead of Palmeiras, whom they now trail by 12 ! That is an awful lot of ground to lose over 12 starts, through which they have gone 2-7-3, beating only Bahia and Vitoria and scoring just 10 goals. Gremio have been a far more solid 6-3-3 through the same sequence.

SP sacked head coach Diego Aguirre and three assistants after last weekend's derby draw with Corinthians (also struggling) and after which, all connected with SP (including the now former head coach) admitted that at no time were they in control of the contest. Another assistant André Jardine will take charge until the end of the season. Gremio have not lost to SP in five meetings, drawing the last two as visitor. A third would be a good result for Gremio and keep SP in contention for top 4 and the new head coach might see the home game with Cruzeiro this weekend as an easier option for his debut win.

That played out 1-1 which was good for us and as a start for Jardine, but who will surely want to go one better today.

Cruzeiro got what I suspect they wanted from this week, a 1-0 midweek home win over Corinthians and ahead of that my notes read ...........

Cruzeiro have clinched that Copa group stage place and are going to finish somewhere between 6th and 13th. If they really wanted it, I feel it would be 6th and they are almost certainly a top 4 team and a match for anyone on a given day. However, I suspect motivation will be a little hard to come by and any which remains will probably materialise in home games. Corinthians were champions in 2015 and 17, but have made a poor fist of their title defence and are only three points above the drop zone, drawing far too many home games and losing 11 times on the road. They host Vasco on Saturday, Cruzeiro do not play until Sunday, the home side are the better team, but odds seem short enough and the visitors have more at stake. However, Corinthians have not beaten a top half of the table team since July 26th and won only 3 of 18 subsequent starts. Cruzeiro are +9 goals at home, with all the damage done through the middle part of games, with a 14-5 goal difference (+9) between the 31st and 75th minute.

I have to see this as meaning more to SP today and they have an excellent record in the series, with an 8-1-1 h2h record here and six wins in Belo Horizonte from the same (last ten) starts. Cruzeiro have another home game in three days time, actually two in BH next week and both of those will surely take precedence over today.

The visitors arrive without midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta ( Cruz are without a win in five road starts without him, he has 5 goals and 4 assists in their last 8 victories) and central defender Dede ( 11-4-4 when he plays, 2-6-7 in his absence), who are both on international duty.
