This is Vasco's debut Serie A fixture and one they will see as very winnable and be "going for" with three very tough looking fixtures to follow over the next 10 days.
Sport opened with a 3-2 defeat of Ceara on Saturday ahead of which my notes included..........
This is something of a derby , ok, the teams are separated by 700km but when you are stuck up in the North East of the country everything under 1,500km, and there are not many, is local !
Sport have just come up from Serie B where they had an 11-7-1 record as host and they are traditionally strong at home, even in their 2018 relegation campaign they lost only five starts here in Recife. When they last came up from B (2013), they were 10-6-3 as hosts in 2014 and 13-5-1 in 2015 when they finished 6th .
This feels like a great chance for Sport and they might need it, with their next two and 4/6 on the road to follow and the two home games in that sequence versus teams who finished 2nd and 6th last season. Home win.
It was an open encounter and in addition to the five goals, there were a further 4 missed BC's that augurs well for today as I am going "over" in a fixture which traditionally produces goals, the last six h2h meetings played here seeing 22 (all 3+) at an average of 3.67 pg. Sport should be relatively relaxed for the 4,600 km round trip to Rio after picking up the three points and will have one eye on the trip to Atletico-GO in three days time which, until this morning, would have looked the easier of their two games this week. They are probably having a rethink about that after AGO beat Flamengo 3-0 last night in a result which has sent shock waves through Serie A and Dominic Torrent appears to be doing his best to make his reign at Fla the shortest in history !
Sport have given up 77 away goals in their last two top flight seasons, the most in each at an average of just over two per game.
Vasco fell out of the blocks last season, did not win until Matchday 8 and their first five starts averaged 3.0 goals, their first 15 starts in 2018 averaged 3.07 pg when the league was running at 2.3 and I expect those and h2h trends to continue.
