Last Sunday I previewed Bayern's home game with struggling Mainz ...............
Yesterday ,when I ran the Bundesliga stats I noted........
Bayern are not top in any statistical category, have conceded 19 goals and 91 ITB chances given up ranks them defensively way below Dortmund, Leverkusen and Leipzig and on a par with Union and Freiburg and, 24 BC's allowed ranks them 5th. I do not doubt they remain the best team in Germany, but they have certainly not improved and possibly gone backwards defensively and that was already their area of weakness ( although it is all relative).
Bayern have conceded in their last 8 starts and will not be too worried about doing so again today as long as they seal the points. Mainz have scored in 4/6 and 6/9 visits to the Allianz and in both league meetings last season, 6-1 here and 3-1 in Mainz.
Despite those defensive numbers, it was still a huge shock to see Mainz go in at half time leading 2-0 and the visitors had only scored twice in the previous 500 + minutes of football. Normal service was resumed after the break with Bayern winning 5-2, but the European champions have now conceded in 12/13 Bundesliga starts, including their last nine. They have won their last five on the road with both teams scoring, two games away to top level opposition like they face today in Dortmund and Leverkusen, the other three to bottom half the table opposition, including two of the bottom four. As we are aware they can beat absolutely anyone , not just domestically, but in Europe and usually do, but an already vulnerable area has become increasingly suspect and you would not trust them to keep a clean sheet against any opponent at present.
BMG have not quite had the start to their domestic season they would have wanted, but 7th place keeps them in touch with the top 4 and we saw in their successful group stage of the Champions League in a super tough section, just what offensive threat they boast, with 16 goals in their six starts.They are still without Marcus Thuram after his disgraceful spitting incident , but are still capable of playing their part in an open contest.
2 units Bayern Munich to win and both teams to score 2.30 +.......2.44 Pinnacle.
