Championship: QPR- Blackburn Rovers

I have no real issues with Blackburn, they play football the right way, almost always to win and created an enormous number of chances , both ITB and for BC's, through the opening months of the campaign and they are deservedly 8th. However, 7th to 12th is only a 4 point gap and it is only 12 points between 7th and 21st and it is fine margins separating all but the top six (who do look the six best teams and that is rarely the case) and the top 5 have a buffer. Also, the Rovers numbers have plateaued recently and they are no longer creating at anywhere near the same level and they have won a couple of recent starts posting "losing" numbers and over the last two months, they are 4-2-4 and they have dropped points to two of the bottom three in that sequence and can lose to anyone as most teams can in the Championship if things do not click and I am not sure that they are for them at present, I also do not like that they are so reliant on the goals of Adam Armstrong, something we have touched upon before.

Rangers are on the up, they have won 3/4 including away to Luton, Cardiff and Watford, we backed them in the first two of those and the win at Vicarage Road on Monday at a very strong host, was a real confidence boost. Ahead of the trip to Cardiff my notes included ........

Rangers weekend game was called off but I did preview it .................

Something as rare as a hen's teeth happened in midweek and that was me rejoicing at a QPR goal when that second strike hit the back of the net at Kenilworth Road, pretty sure I have never cheered a Rangers goal previously and I must admit to feeling a little "dirty" afterwards! Anyway, Rangers won 2-0 over Luton and my notes on the game went a lot like this ................

This game was cancelled over New Year, ahead of the postponement I wrote ........

Ahead of that trip to Carrow Road to play Norwich in midweek I wrote .............

QPR, as much it pains me to say it, Rangers are better than 19th and they are the best offensive team in terms of ITB and BC chances created, in the bottom half of the table. Of course , they are not as good at the other end of the pitch, but creating opportunities always gives you a chance and, on what I have seen with my own eyes, that xP of 29 points which would put them smack bang in mid table is right on the money and where they should be. But, if they were to be dragged in a relegation dogfight, I would not be shedding too many tears !

They will be pleased with that point in a 1-1 draw and now feels about the right time to start monitoring them a little more closely and surely, they will start making more of those scoring opportunities. They were top bottom half of the table goal scorers last season and with an offensive minded head coach and those stats, they have to begin scoring more regularly to pull away from the drop zone and they are not solid enough defensively to secure survival without it. I am not sure they will win today away to Luton, but they should score and might well need to do so twice to get a result of any kind, so good value at big odds on them to do so.

Neither has played a subsequent league game and we cannot use FA Cup form with so many clubs happy to be out of the competition and everyone rotating heavily. Rangers have re-signed favourite son Charlie Austin, he scored 48 goals in 89 appearances for the R's between 2013 and 2016, helping the club reach the Premier League via the play-offs in 2014.Town had to recall a player from loan yesterday with injury and COVID issues leaving them a little shorthanded.

Charlie Austin scored inside 40 minutes and earned MOTM plaudits on his (new) debut, Rangers also "won" on target attempts 8-2, BC's 4-1, ITB 10-4 and the Town goalkeeper was their best player on the night. Wycombe have improved a little through recent months and took a point when these two met last month at Adams Park, but we have spoken about their issues with budget and quality of player alot and most recently ahead of their last home league game versus Middlesbrough ( see above) . They remain bottom of the table, are 7 points adrift of the team in 20th and are not going to be playing second tier football next season.

Rangers will have to do without my vocal support today or at any time in the future, but I expect them to build on that midweek win now and Austin feels a good signing, maybe a very good one !

The mood suddenly feels better at Rangers and certainly more upbeat than in the Cardiff ranks, the visitors have been creating plenty this season, far more than we would expect from a bottom 5-6 team with 162 ITB attempts and 40 BC's , which is way out of kilter to just 22 goals scored, they had 37 at this stage last season and now have the target man to start converting those numerous chances.

1X2 would not really surprise today, but odds about the home win are too big and the R's chance is surely greater than 33%.
