We have two potentially entertaining games in prospect today in Group F, fixtures which complete the first round of the competition.This is the "group of death" and every major tournament has one, unless you opt for the Copa America format, but it is hard to argue with it in this case, with Portugal/France/Germany having provided 11 finalists and 6 winners in the last 12 Euros and also the last two World Cup winners.That firmly hands Hungary, who are appearing in just their second Euros since 1972 , the short straw, however, the previous occasion they made it to these finals was in 2016 and they were in Group F (good omen ?) , along with Portugal and won the group courtesy of a win over Austria and draws with Iceland and today's opponent. That was a wild and crazy 3-3 draw and was as open as the scoreline suggests, with five goals coming in a 20 minute spell and none in the final third of the game, which is odd. That was Matchday 3 and both teams progressed, it is a little different today as this is the group opener and it might prove difficult for either to progress without winning this , teams probably need a minimum three points and zero/+ goal difference (normal criteria) to qualify and without three points today, that would mean beating either France or Germany, or taking something from both of those fixtures and that is a tall order.
Hungary have home advantage , with this game being held in Budapest, but they have gone backwards, are ranked 19 FIFA places lower than in 2016 and have an ageing squad and at least four likely starters are missing from their squad due to injury, including their best young talent in Dominik Szoboszlai . Portugal also have a squad long in the tooth as we touched upon in the pre tournament notes, but have some real quality along with it and the front three of Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota promises much. They are European champions and will want to make a good fist of defending their hard earned title and have lost only to France and narrowly in their last 15 starts, which included two each against both the French and Spain. They are very tough to beat.
These two know each other well, since that high scoring draw in 2016, they have met in the same WC qualifying group and Portugal won both scoring four goals, three in the home leg, in fact, Portugal have scored exactly three goals in five of the last seven h2h meetings . The Portugese do have some defensive issues and the loss of Manchester City right back Joao Cancelo to COVID was huge, Hungary will go for it and hopefully we can see a mini shootout like at Euro 2016. I like Portugal to win, but straight odds are a little skinny and I prefer ...........
