Premier League :Tottenham Hotspur- Leicester City

It has been a good 20-21 for both teams so far and possibly beyond what either expected coming into this campaign. Tottenham were second going into this round of games trailing Liverpool by 3 points, Leicester were 4th a further point back. However, Spurs have dropped three points by conceding late goals at Crystal Palace (1-1) and away to the league leaders (2-1) in the last 7 days and City have lost 3 of their last 5 starts and both will be desperate to get back on track. The Foxes do have great bouncebackability and have 8 wins and 5 defeats this season, with 5 of those victories coming on the road, where they can play fully to their strengths and they are as quick in transition as anyone in the Premier League, having said that, Tottenham have actually scored more goals on the counter attack since the start of last season. Under Jose Mourinho Spurs have played a defense first game , are tough to break down and sit very deep, especially against the other top sides and it worked well for them in a 2-0 home defeat of Manchester City and 0-0 draw at Chelsea and we discussed those ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge three weeks ago............

Tottenham are coming off that confidence boosting 2-0 win over Manchester City last week , that game skewed their ITB numbers a bit, as they opted to stick to a certain game plan and play on the counter, but they will not care about that, ahead of the game I noted ............

Huge game for Tottenham if they are to be considered genuine title contenders.  They have options in all positions and suddenly  (it does seem to have happened almost overnight) moved up a level under Jose Mourinho. They have six big forward options and the star names of Kane, Son and Bale (once 100%) give them a fearsome looking offensive and when it all clicks, they are close to unplayable, witness the second half away to Southampton and opening 45 at Old Trafford, United were reduced to ten men after 28 minutes in that, but nothing much would have changed if they had 13 men on the field !

ITB, BC and xP as well as the real table all put Spurs ahead of City currently and this is a game they simply have to take something from. They actually have a great h2h record winning 4/6 h2h meetings as host and we cannot let odds like these pass unbacked.

They made 10 changes for the midweek Europa League game which they won 4-0 .

Chelsea won 2-1 at Rennes in midweek in the Champions League, it was a far tougher game and one they lost their way in for 45 minutes or so after dominating early. They started with 7 players who began the league game last Sunday and ended with 10, which indicates the flow of that midweek fixture. Good numbers for both teams , Chelsea are giving up fewer ITB, but Tottenham are much better for BC's and are miserly in terms of goals conceded as befits a Jose led team. Spurs do not have a good record in this fixture, but their head coach is more at home at Stamford Bridge than elsewhere and this feels like a very different Tottenham and one we have seen at their absolute best against Big 6 opposition this season, games in which they have traditionally struggled. I do not think they will lose today and see any value as with them off level ball.

The game plan was also a couple of minutes away from working at Anfield and although they had few chances and even less of the ball, Tottenham did have opportunities themselves to take the lead after equalising, in an entertaining contest. Spurs should really have more points on board, they dominated home games with West Ham (led 3-0 and it should have been 5 +) and Newcastle , conceding late, late equalisers in both, add in the Palace and Liverpool games and 25 points could easily, perhaps should be , 6-7 more. They were not bold enough at Selhurst Park after taking the lead and holding it for just shy of an hour and I hope they have learned their lesson this time.  Spurs have won the last 3 h2h meetings as hosts scoring 11 goals and Son and Kane ran City totally ragged in the last of those which came post lockdown in July (Tottenham were 3 up inside 40 minutes) and the two front men are on fire this season and capable of doing similar today. Spurs last 4 wins have all come by 2+ goals and hopefully they go and look for that buffer today and City have lost 3-0 and 2-0 to the last two top 6 teams they have played (the two Merseyside clubs).
