I previewed Valladolid's midweek trip to Eibar where I favoured goals in what was basically a friendly with the television audience to themselves ...........
The schedule since restart has been gruelling and these two have been under the additional pressure of the threat of relegation, now both are safe and they can relax a little and look to enjoy their final two starts, the last of which comes on Sunday. Both have been playing a defensive game in recent weeks and it has worked out well for them, but time to throw off the shackles now and doubly so I feel with this fixture the only early televised game and with an increased audience, surely the bigger interests of football in these troubled times will prevail and the clubs feel they have some duty to entertain. Eibar have scored the most amongst the bottom 7 and only two teams have conceded more home goals. Valladoild have had bottom 3-4 xP and ITB numbers all season long and have to be considered fortunate to be in this position with games remaining. Both teams will rotate , Real are also shorthanded due to injury and suspension. Eibar have a history of high scoring games to finish the campaign and they have scored six on final day against Big 3 teams (Barce twice and Atletico) and only lost one, I know this is matchday 37 and not 38 , but I think that will be their mindset and that approach should set the tempo for this.
That played out well with Eibar winning 3-1 . I expect both teams to play their part in high scoring games today.
Eibar's trip to Valencia to play Villarreal is pretty much a friendly, the home side need something to claim 5th, but are guaranteed 6th at least and both places carry a Europa League group stage spot, in addition, it is likely that they will claim 5th regardless of what they do this evening by virtue of a result elsewhere. However, Villa will want to end on a high you feel and are the top La Liga home goalscorers outside of the top 2 and games here at El Madrigal have averaged 3.22 goals, which is 0.75 above the league mean. With Eibar amongst the goals in midweek and "always" scoring a few against the La Liga elite on final day (see above) , we should see action aplenty today.
Valladolid and Betis IS a friendly game , I expect both to relax today, the hosts will be pleased the way this season has gone and it was only ever about survival for them and as I said above, to get that done with games to play was a bonus. Betis will see things very differently, they have talent and far loftier ambitions and 50,000 season ticket holders were expecting another European push, not a bottom 6-7 finish. Head coach Rubi paid the price and was sacked last month, he had enjoyed huge success at Huesca and Espanyol and had arrived amid much fanfare last summer. He was replaced two games ago by veteran Manuel Pellegrini and he will be looking closely at his squad to see who is surplus to requirements. They have the players to win this comfortably if it all clicks, that has happened all too rarely this season, but Valladolid will be more willing to open up and that is not easy for a team who have set up defensively all season long, it is just alien to them. I would not be surprised to see an away win, but feel goals are the best option.
