League 1: AFC Wimbledon- Sheffield United

They did it the hard way after falling behind at Gillingham last Sunday, but United did get that second win in a row and it will have done them the power of good, ahead of that, in addition to reproducing my pre season notes, which you should all know well enough by now, I updated with ......

They picked up just a point from their first four starts , low ebb was a terrible 3-0 home loss to Southend, but they showed some fight in a defeat to Millwall next time out and then Wilder made full use of their first free midweek of the season to record a come from behind win over his former club Oxford United. That would have settled nerves and now they can build on that. Gillingham were our pick last season , we have a mountain of notes on them, they went close and I am surprised that they have managed to hit the ground running this time round, but they will be pleased with 10 points and they are still in the League Cup having beaten Premier League Watford on the road, but this will be their 9th start inside 29 days and I am not sure they have the depth to compete against a stronger and better rested opponent for whom this is a hugely important game.None of the top 7 who played yesterday won, which would not have gone unnoticed at United and has seen everyone in League 1 close up and three points today could really kick start things for the Blades.

Wilder brought in his 11th and 12th signings on deadline day with Ethan Ebanks-Landell (Wolves) and Daniel Lafferty (Burnley) joining and the head coach said afterwards, that he was very happy now with the strength and depth of his squad ,Wilder added: "We have now got four really good centre-halves at the club now, Jake Wright was fantastic on his debut and like with the left-back position, we now have competition for places having not had a senior centre-half on the books when we arrived."Both Ethan and Daniel both have good pedigrees and both will make us stronger. The lads are good fits, now they have to perform consistently when they have an opportunity."We've done our homework on Ethan, he's a competitor and a leader and despite his age he has good experience."I'm very content that we've done a lot of good business throughout the window." We've got good deals for those that have departed and we've recruited well. "

Now they play on the road again and make another trip South, neither of which will bother them, as it is a chance to build some momentum away from the white hot temperature and pressure of Bramall Lane. What they will really have enjoyed is another free midweek and a chance to gel and do further work with the still new head coach. This will not be a trip into the unknown for Wilder, who has brought five teams to Kingsmeadow in recent seasons and has yet to taste defeat, three wins, two draws and only one goal conceded. He has a basically a fully fit squad to choose from and will have additional background knowledge at his club on a couple of Dons, with as many as three in the home squad tomorrow, having moved from the Blades.

Top 5 teams Bolton and Scunthorpe have already won here this season and Unted will have a firm target of following suit, their neighbours Chesetrfield came to Dons last week and lost 2-1, they would have got a lot of local info about that. The Spirites were angry that they lost, they felt they dominated, gave away two sloppy goals, were denied at least two "good" penalty shouts and by the woodwork and wasted several other great opportunities, so nothing much to complain about ! That should give United heart and plenty to work on.
