That 93rd minute equaliser for Everton last night , after Leicester City had led for 87 minutes, must have felt like a knife through the heart to Burnley and all associated with the club, without it, the Clarets could have moved out of the bottom 3 for the first time since Matchday 3 (which doesn't really count !) with the win this evening. However, the three points will still take them to within a point of safety and is a mighty big carrot, with the Toffees playing Liverpool on Sunday and then Chelsea, whereas Burnley next host Wolves and then travel to Watford, who have lost 10 straight games at Vicarage Road. It is a huge 10 days for both clubs, but a real opportunity for Burnley to end it above Everton if they start with three points this evening.

Burnley have played three games in the last 15 days, first up was a battling come from behind win over Everton and my notes on that are reproduced at the foot of this email, they then went to Norwich and lost 2-0, they started well but fell behind to a deflected shot and then struggled to turn good positions and possession into clear cut chances. That was a costly defeat and was followed by the shock dismissal of Sean Dyche (thankfully, it looks like the pictured Royal Dyche pub will keep it's name). He was replaced on an interim basis by Mike Jackson, he took his team to the London Stadium on Sunday and they led early , before the Hammers came on strong and earned a share of the points, two big events in that game,  a serious injury to MF Ashley Westwood and then the Carets missed a penalty which would have given them a two goal lead. It was all West Ham after the break, but Burnley bossed the first half and need something similar this evening.

You might as well toss a coin to see which Southampton side turn up, the one who lost 6-0 at home to Chelsea in their start before last (it could easily have been 10-0) or the one who beat Arsenal 1-0 at the weekend, with the Gunners confusing matters even more by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night ! Saints are safe and have their "derby" with Brighton in three days time and whilst they are the better team when they are motivated, the showing against the Gunners was their only performance and win in six starts through which they have conceded 15 goals. We have been here before with them , their game is all about a high energy press and it doesn't work when there is little at stake and/or you run out of motivation/energy, last season they started strongly with 29 points from their first 17 starts and then went 4-2-15 to end the campaign in freefall and as a club they need a bit of a rethink. They have a system which works and can work well, but not for 38 or even 30 games and owners Sport Republic have some big decisions to make in their first summer in charge of the club. They have also been as up and down in their previous 7 starts against bottom 4 teams, winning three and losing three, conceding 2+ goals in four, including a 2-2 home draw with Burnley and the Clarets have scored at least twice in 4 of the last 5 h2h meetings.

I think the hosts need two goals to win this and it feels a toss up between that which is priced at 2.52 or the straight win @ 2.69, I think the goal option is marginally better.  They have done it on a regular basis in this fixture/series, did so in their last home start and should have scored twice against the Hammers.

2 units Burnley to score "over" 1.5 goals 2.52 asian line.

Good luck !

It is ok having games in hand , but they still have to be won and both Burnley and Everton have been making a poor job of that, those GIH will be down to just one on most teams after today and as you can see from the mini table above , Burnley really need the win , Everton, who have won just three times since September, might well be happy with a point, but don't draw many games in any case and play Manchester United, Leicester City, Liverpool and Chelsea next and it is not certain how good a point here might look down the line. They are coming off a narrow loss at West Ham on Sunday, ahead of which I highlighted their issues ...........

Everton will have watched with glee as the bottom three all dropped points yesterday and that lessens pressure on them today, which is just as well

Everton are struggling big time and have won just 3/21 EPL starts, collecting 12 points across over half a season and you don't need me to tell you that 21-22 points would not keep you in the top flight, or any league for that matter ! There is something very wrong at Goodison Park, was Frank Lampard the man for a relegation battle, having never been involved in one as player or coach (?) and I spoke earlier this year about some very odd and it has to be said wrong decisions from the boardroom., leading up the dismissal of Rafa Benitez ...............Everton are in a mess, they sacked Rafael Benitez just weeks after dismissing their Director of Football, Head of Recruitment, Chief Scout, First team scout/senior analyst, first team rehab/fitness coach and head of sports science. Some with the intention of giving the Spaniard more autonomy (!), some bought in by him.

Supporters are very passionate, but many seem to have accepted their fate , with the feeling being that they are not likely to save themselves and the only way they will be playing top flight football next season, is by the bottom three being even poorer .

The Toffees last two starts (both at home) did include a win, firstly they lost 1-0 to Wolves and created next to nothing , no BC's , 3 attempts ITB and an xGF of 0.38 ! They then beat Newcastle United by the same scoreline with a 100th minute winner , but that was the only chance worthy of the name they created in that game and it is hard to see them getting too much joy today.

Both teams have HUGE games in midweek , West Ham have a Europa League quarter final with Lyon on Thursday and Everton travel to Turf Moor to play Burnley a day earlier and you only need to look at the league table to see how important that is and I am not sure that the Toffees can afford to give their all today, come up short and then match the effort of the Clarets three days later. They have lost all four road games under Lampard, also giving up over 2.5 xGA on average .

United can move up to 6th (5th if Tottenham were to lose) and head coach David Moyes will like the idea of that after his short tenure at Old Trafford about which he felt hard done by, also the Hammers are operating with a relatively small squad so have few options but to field a strong team

West Ham won 2-1, they were much the better team before the break, but the Toffees upped their game in the second half and equalised and looked likely to get something, but I am not sure how much that had to do with them improving or the Hammers looking to play with that big European fixture in mind and United did retake the lead quickly after letting it slip. I have seen both these teams live in 2022 and felt that Burnley were the better team and that Everton weren't a "team" at all , with many players having personal as opposed to collective agendas.

Really interesting game, worthy of discussion, but difficult to get a handle on. Burnley are used to such games and relegation battles and Sean Dyche knows how to set his team up to fight and frustrate and his players have had an extra 24 hours and no travel to rest up and more importantly prepare, how many "six pointers" at the wrong end of the table have the visiting players or head coach been involved in ? Not many !
