Sunday :

EPL: Brentford - West Ham United ...........these notes were written and sent to subscribers @ 10:00 (UK) on Thursday

I want to get this out of the way, not really because I feel odds will tumble, but some people could come to a similar conclusion ,I am not going to change my mind and it frees up space in the weekend emails.

Saturday-Sunday games for Brentford with a long time to bask in the warm glow of a famous 4-1 win at Stamford Bridge (notes on that are reproduced below the "good luck" sign off).

Sunday- Thursday-Sunday schedule for United , with their biggest game of the season coming just days before they make the short trip across London to Lionel Road.

The Bees are all but safe now, but that should enable them to relax and play their natural game.

Brentford are 14th in the EPL, but are 5th -8th for xP (depending on which table you trust) , having posted very similar numbers to the Hammers and the one which places them 5th has United 11 points adrift of the mighty, mighty Bees.

I was at the London Stadium for the reverse fixture, Brentford won 2-1, dominated and led early, should have been 2-3 up at half time, United equalised and were on top for much of the second half, but the visitors regrouped and forced a late winner. We went with Brentford "over" 1.5 goals and that is a bet we have done well with long term and the Hammers have conceded twice in 5/9 road games, including two in which they avoided defeat. Brentford are able to play further up the pitch with Eriksen in the team and his presence stops Ivan Toney from dropping too far back and it is amazing how much difference the Dane has made. I was thinking about this a lot yesterday, you just never really see a world class player in what some would call a poor, let's say average team, they are usually in top 4-6 teams, surrounded by players of similar if not quite equal ability, it is almost a one off. It helps that Eriksen doesn't seem to have much of an ego, is willing to help and put in a big shift and share his knowledge and experience on the training pitches too and it is almost a unique experiment if you will. Brentford are an amazing fit for him, as the whole club ethos is about improving players and never signing the finished article (Eriksen being the exception of course) so everyone around him is willing to learn and absorb what he wants to teach and pass on.

I wrote an article three weeks ago about why I felt he would stay at Brentford and despite ever increasing attention and a lot of ridiculous statements like he is too good for the Bees, I don't see what he can gain from moving apart from money ( might be more of a concern for his agent) or European football and that is hardly going to help his World Cup dreams with multiple extra games and he is unlikely to go to a top 4 team,so possibly playing Europa League, which could be a poisoned chalice. Also, he would lose a LOT, everything that was set out in that article. Anyway, it is fun to see how far he and Brentford can go over the final 7 games and would just be incredible if that was extended to a further 38 games in 2022-23.

To put those Europa League exertions into black and white, United have played 7 additional games this season and will probably not have been able to discuss Brentford this week, it will have all been about OL, they will kick off on Sunday 64 hours after tonight's game ends and will not be able to have a full training session in the interim. Bees had two days off and four full days on the Jersey Road pitches to prepare solely for United.  Huge advantage for Brentford and does Eriksen want that crammed schedule or something similar in a World Cup year ?

I think Brentford to win @ circa 2.86 is a solid price and to score twice @ almost the same odds is just as good, possibly better.

2 units Brentford "over" 1.5 goals 2.84 asian line.

Good luck !

Premier League: Chelsea- Brentford (April 2nd)

The mighty, mighty Bees are not yet safe from relegation concerns and are unlikely to get the three points they possibly need to achieve that today, but the Blues do have to play Real Madrid in midweek, look booked for third anyway and this is a derby, albeit only a minor West london one, with Bees -Fulham and the daddy of them all, Brentford-QPR, far bigger games !

Brentford's last game was away to Leicester City.............

==================================================================================================================================================

Injury hit Leicester City will be without 8-9 players including Jamie Vardy (City have a 1-2-5 record when he plays 25 minutes or less, 1-3-2 last season, so just 2 wins in 14 starts) and played on Thursday night in Rennes.

Brentford have won their last two starts and look a different team once more now that Christian Eriksen is in the line up, which enables them to play higher up the pitch, they have scored five goals in beating what I admit are two poorish teams (Burnley were not so bad) and top striker Ivan Toney has notched all five. His heat map looks very different now, with more time in the final third and no reason to believe that will not be the case again today.

Last weekend I wrote ............

Massive "six pointer" at the foot of the EPL, but both teams might see a point apiece as one gained rather than two dropped on this occasion with Watford, Norwich and Leeds all losing heavily on Thursday and the Clarets are draw specialists. That is not really the Brentford way and they are as likely to find a way to lose it if they try and play for a point. Also they are coming off their first win in nine starts last week (3-1 away to Norwich ) and that was the game which heralded the debut of Christian Eriksen and return of Ivan Toney. The former posted game best stats and IT scored a hat-trick ,so it could hardly have gone better for the duo and with another week on the training ground at Jersey Road, the pair and team in general are only going to be more in sync. Burnley might fancy this as they outplayed Brentford in the reverse fixture at Turf Moor, but that was their best opening 45 minutes of the season and probably the worst from the Bees. That day Brentford were without Ajer, Raya, Mbeumo ( all of whom will start today) , three others and of course, Eriksen, so a very different line up and it feels very much like early season Bees today, plus the Danish star.

It also appears that Ben Mee is missing for Burnley, he is absolutely vital to how they play and I highlighted that mid last season ...........

Burnley made a terrible start to their campaign, but have improved dramatically over their last six starts , collecting 9 points and losing only to Manchester City. They actually lost that 5-0 but that is favoured scoreline against an opponent they seem to be unable not just to beat , lots of teams have issues with City, but to even stay competitive against for 10 minutes and it was the second 5-0 Premier league loss to the Manchester side post lockdown. The upturn in fortune coincided with the return to the Clarets side of CB Ben Mee who is absolutely vital to how they play and a team leader. In Mee's last 14 starts which were not against City, Burnley are unbeaten , with an 8-6-0 record and an incredibly low four goals conceded ! Burnley are not the same team when Mee plays, or perhaps it is more accurate to say that they are not the same in his absence, but right now they are playing well and their old disciplined and very difficult to score against selves.

I am surprised that Mee and fellow CB James Tarkowski do not score more goals , the latter is a player I know well from his time at Brentford where he was always a big threat from set pieces and that is important today, or could be as Wolves have given up the third most top flight goals from set plays. Tarkowski, or "Jug Ears" as he is un-affectionately known at Brentford after behaving poorly to orchestrate a move away from the Bees, has not scored this season, but has had 7 attempts on goal in his 10 PL starts this season.  One or both of the central defenders feel like they are due a goal and it is easy to suspect it could come today , or in Burnley's next start which is against Leeds who have given up the most goals from set pieces.

Mee actually scored a couple of goals after that at HUGE odds. The Clarets are winless in 14 starts when Mee is absent, five this season, conceding 2+ goals in three. Tarkowski is returning to Brentford for the first time since leaving ( see above) and I can tell you that nothing has been forgotten (he refused to play for Brentford against Burnley) and he is going to get 90+ minutes of abuse. Without his usual partner, it is going to make for a very uncomfortable afternoon in the centre of the Burnley backline.

Brentford lost 2-1 at home to Leicester back in October but deserved at least a draw and easy to see Brentford amongst the goals today, even if that might not be enough to win the game,hopefully it is ! City have the "name" and Brentford are well, just little old Brentford, but the truth is that they two teams would be level on points with the away win and the Bees are 20 points better off in terms of xP which is massive, with the Foxes on 23 placing them 17th with 17 "defeats" and the visitors 6th, with 13 "wins" and 7 more goals.

===============================================================================================================================================================

I went with Brentford to score twice, they lost 2-1, Eriksen tested positive for COVID and could not play, but City scored with two long range efforts and the Bees missed two cast iron chances and "won" xG 1.15 -1.70 and should have had a second goal .

Eriksen joined up with the Danish national team late, but played in both friendlies with Netherlands (off the bench) and Serbia and scored in each, with an assist from Brentford's DM Christian Norgaard , who looked MOTM to me, and in that game the two, along with Mathias Jensen, formed an all Bees midfield for 15 minutes or so in a top 10 ranked national team.

I expect Brentford to play without too much fear today, their fate will not be decided here but in the four remaining home games and trips to Watford and Everton.

Chelsea are 7-5-1 at home, having conceded goals to Burnley, Southampton, Leeds, Everton and Brighton here at Stamford Bridge and they also drew three of those. I would not rule out the upset totally and a 1-1 draw keeps calling me, but will opt for a safer..........
