Yet another big win for Fiorentina last Thursday when they returned from Poznan 4-1 victors ...........
On a quick look, it appears it is 27 years since a Polish team last played in a European quarter final tie, so this is doubtless a big deal for Poznan, but that does highlight how they have overachieved to reach this level of competition. Fiorentina have a far stronger history and look to be treating the competition seriously, which has not always been the case in the past in the "lesser" European events. They are quoted as second favourites to win the ECL and are playing at a very high level currently, they have no real need for league points , but they are unbeaten in seven Serie A starts including wins over Inter and Milan, have one foot and four toes in the Coppa Italia final ,after winning the semi final first leg 2-0 in Cremonese last midweek and are in the last eight of this competition and it is turning into a famous season for La Viola. Their stats were also very good when we updated the last six games recently and they are well suited to playing on the road, where they have won six in a row, scoring 16 goals in the process. Altogether they have posted 10 away wins this season, 8 came along with clean sheets, they scored 3+ goals in five and won eight by at least two goals and something similar this evening will put this tie to bed. Lech were domestic champions last season, but are third, 15 points off the pace currently and with 8 fewer than at this stage 12 months ago. Much has been written about some strong home results for them, including a 3-0 defeat of Villarreal, but the Spanish side had already won the group when that was played and did not take the game "seriously". An inform Serie A team, motivated to progress, in top form with elite performance levels and scoring freely, should be capable of winning on the road to an Ekstraklasa side who have already surpassed competition ambitions.
They are now unbeaten in 14 starts (all competitions) posting 12 wins and are pretty much guaranteed a Coppa Italia final spot and one in the last four of the European Conference League. Not sure what their target is in terms of final league position, but 7th will probably get them back into Europe, but they have two other chances for that. However, no immediate need to worry about either of the cups and they have the winning habit and will surely wish to ride that as long as possible and have "forgotten" how to lose! Also they do have the chance to finish above Juventus this season, the team they hate above all others and that doesn't happen very often and their main local rival is Bologna and they would move level on points with the pair should they take all three points this evening.
We can make a strong case for this being more important for Atalanta as they would move 5th win the win and only two points off a Champions League place, but the same was true last week when they lost 2-0 at home to Bologna and I am just loath to oppose La Viola right now.
