Ahead of a Matchday 2 trip to Moscow I spoke about how Atletico were a big player in the Champions League nowadays and that they were well aware of how important it was to try and win your group ............
Lokomotiv will have been delighted with a Group Matchday 1 win in Leverkusen, where they took both chances which came their way and had just 22% possession( yes, I know ! But that is VERY low). But system is going well for them and I very much doubt they will even look to see too much more of the ball this evening against an Atletico side who are now a major European force and name. I have spoken a lot in recent CL campaigns about how all the big teams understand the importance of winning their group and play accordingly and after a home draw with Juventus, the other section bigwig, Atletico know they need maximum points this evening, they will also be delighted to be making the trip to Moscow today when it is 16 degrees and not on Matchday 5 or 6. The visiting squad looks strong with no injuries of note and whilst their road form in Europe have not been great, they know they still have to go to Turin and that makes this "must win" they are also 3-1-0 in their last four trips to Russia and beat Lokomotiv by a combined 8-1 in the 17-18 Europa League, including a 5-1 win here in the RZD Arena in March last year. So, no trip into the unknown and good and positive mental memories of that visit. Think we will see more attacking purpose from AM tonight with Diego Simeone having more options and looking to field a very offensive looking line up.
They won that 2-0 and whilst they will be very disappointed by back to back La Liga draws, they are still only three points off the lead and, in any case, I suspect priority #1 will be this competition this season. Next two group stage games are trips to Germany for the return with Bayer and then to Turin to face Juve and things will get complicated for them without all three points tonight, especially as they play top four teams in the league immediately before each and host Barcelona days after the return from Italy. Win today and they do "know" that Juventus will beat Lokomotiv and it takes at least some of the pressure off all those fixtures. Leverkusen are 9th in the Bundesliga and are coming off a 3-0 loss at Frankfurt, they have some good offensive talent, but are short of options at the back and especially at wing back and doubly so on the left. They are pointless through two groups stage games , which means they are going to have to attack at some stage and leave that weakened defense exposed and they did not have an attempt on target in 90 minutes in a 3-0 loss to Juventus.
