First leg ended 1-1 with both teams scoring in the first half, it was a crazy opening 45 minutes, end to end and unlike what you usually see at this stage of CL qualifying. Cluj will have seen plenty that they can exploit in Glasgow tonight, especially from left back Boli Bolingoli -Mbombo who is ok going forward, but not defensively at present and it is easy to see why the Scottish champions are showing continued interest in Rico Henry of Brentford who is the best English left back outside the PL in my opinion, but is a little injury prone. Ahead of their previous round I touched upon Cluj and how we used to support them in Europe, ahead of a trip to Tel Aviv, I thought they might lose that, but did end with thoughts that either team could cause Celtic some issues................
Cluj are a team we spoke of a lot when they first broke into the big time, making the huge transition from third tier domestic football to the UEFA Champions League in just six years and they served us well, but they struggled in interim years until winning the title again in each of the last two seasons.I expect whichever team comes through this tie to give Celtic a lot of trouble in the next qualifying round.
Domestically, Celtic can pretty much attack contantly without too much defensive consideration , with some of the SPL opposition of League 1/bottom of the Championship level, in Europe it is different and it makes things difficult for them, especially making changes to their backline and I feel Cluj will cause them problems tonight and, the visitors need to score at least once to keep this tie alive, they were without key players in the first leg, but might be a little better off tonight, regardless of which, the visitors know they have to take the game to Celtic wherever possible and that they can trouble the home defence.
I spoke about the "crazy nature" of the opening half of the first leg, it got even more wild in the second 45 minutes of the return, with Cluj winning 4-3 and six goals coming after the 51st minute. Both will have been pleased with Matchday 1 results, Celtic drew 1-1 at Rennes and Cluj beat Lazio 2-1 on home soil (what a strong section). We know that the host will go for this, the nature of their SPL domination and expectation from supporters demands nothing less. Cluj have less pressure three points in the bag and will be buoyed and had confidence boosted by scoring 4 times on that previous visit, also, having come from behind in that, they will not suddenly lose heart if they concede first this evening . The visitors can set up differently this time round and do not have to score , but I still think this could explode into action if we get a first goal and that oddsmakers have underestimated the chances of another shhot out, or at least a mini one.
