In yesterday's NYRB-Charlotte preview I noted ........
For Charlotte I was really impressed with a couple of players especially Benjamin Bender who works tirelessly in CM, he is just back from injury, he has a goal and two assists from the four games he has started, also hit the woodwork against Seattle and he made a 9 goal contribution in just 1,650 minutes last season, his first in the league, including a goal against Red Bulls, actually in June 12 months ago. He was the #1 pick in the 2022 SuperDraft and given the backroom staff at Charlotte we would expect them to make a good selection and they have! They had 5-6 players in the box from open play for all of the goals, the second took 17 seconds from box to box and to get that many forward, that quickly was noteworthy and there were a lot of passes in the move, with Bender having three, including the assist.
Bender scored twice inside the opening 20 minutes last night and for someone who has played so little senior football, he looks the real deal to me and Steve Walsh or whomever in the crowded Charlotte analytics department spotted him has unearthed a gem, with almost limitless potential. He is two footed, technically gifted, with great awareness and works tirelessly , he presses hard and well and has a fantastic engine and contributes in both boxes. BB is very cool and clinical in front of goal, with a great first touch and I would be amazed if he stayed in Charlotte too long, I would assume that Red Bull and I am talking Salzburg and Leipzig, not NY, would have got a good close look last night, but he could play almost anywhere in Europe . He would be relatively cheap now, but not for long. Several clubgowi readers work for EPL clubs, you know where to send the commission!
